Light-Focused Affordable Housing
Community Center

Year: Fall 2019
Location: Astoria, NY
OVERVIEW
The project primarily concentrates on the management and conveyance of light, featuring uneven glass facades that extend from the first to the sixth levels, permitting natural light to permeate the building's entirety. Natural sunlight is used as a source of light to the maximum extent possible to illuminate the hallways and thus reduce power consumption. Moreover, the architectural design includes interlocking cubes that not only augment the living area with a modest terrace for some apartments but also increase the usable space. The apartments range in size from 450-640 sqft and provide living space for singles to families.

On the ground level, a range of essential services is offered to low-income resident, including a public shower room with facilities for persons with disabilities. Additional amenities encompass a communal laundry, a nursing station, a café for residents to purchase food and water, and an event space for non-profit entities to organize gatherings or activities. All these facilities are situated on the southern part of the first floor.

The residential areas span the second to the sixth floors on the south side, where the ambiance is characterized by warm and soft hues to foster a cozy and eco-friendly living environment. On the northern side, the reduced illumination has led to the creation of communal areas such as a crafting room, a coffee lounge, and an additional laundry area, offering opportunities for part-time employment for residents with lower incomes. A circular staircase leads from the first floor to the top floor, making it easy for people to move between floors.
