Year: 2021
Location: 4400 Frankford Ave, Philadelphia, PA
Area: 10,331 sqft
OVERVIEW
The proprietor aims to establish a chan temple that can increase the diversity of American Buddhism. Enhance the visibility of native-English-speaking residents. He choses this large place and willing to rebuild it with flexibility. The proprietor hopes to build the temple not only manifest the Chinese Buddism and culture, but also embrace the globle peculiarity.

The rebuilding process will focus on creating multipurpose areas that can be adapted for different uses – from meditation halls to educational spaces. This expanded vision for the Chan temple emphasizes a balance between tradition and modernity, aiming to create a dynamic and inclusive environment that resonates with people from various backgrounds and contributes to the rich tapestry of American Buddhism. The temple will not only be a place of worship and learning but also a cultural bridge, bringing together the ancient wisdom of Chinese Buddhism with the unique characteristics of global Buddhist practices.

Existing Condition

The building where the Buddhist temple is located was formerly a bank with two floors plus a basement. Philadelphia is a city with a large Chinese population, and the majority of Chinese people believe in Buddhism. However, there are many churches in the local area, but people have no way to learn Buddhism.

According to the local characteristics: diverse races, average age, stable life, the design aims to increase the functional diversity of the Buddhist temple to form a community service Buddhist temple, so as to better integrate into the local society, and based on this, to widely spread Buddhist culture.
